All of us who live in cities walk past homeless people every day. We see them sleeping in doorways, begging in front of torn paper cups with little handwritten notices, selling the Big Issue. Film maker Penny Woolcock spent eight months in that parallel world, befriending people. By revisiting them frequently over time, she has earned the respect and confidence of her characters, building an intimacy that makes for powerful viewing.
