The Underwire Festival is the UK’s only film festival celebrating female filmmaking talent across the crafts and we are delighted to have not just one but three films screening there this year!
It feels like particularly great timing as our theme for the 2016 Bridging the Gap films was Women! Each of the four emerging filmmakers commissioned were women and the subjects they happened to focus on were also women. In doing this we hoped to help a little in redressing the gender imbalance in the filmmaking world and we deeply appreciate festivals like Underwire that exist to recognise everyone’s efforts in this regard. The festival will take place in cinemas across London from November 30 – December 4.
The two Bridging the Gap shorts screening are:
Leah is a Deaf stand-up comedian who performs in British Sign Language in Edinburgh. Her dream is to bring her comedy to mainstream audiences with a sign language interpreter and raise awareness about Deaf Culture through her shows. But will they get it?
– Screening 18:30 Nov 30, Genesis Cinema, in the Girls to the Front programme.
– Nominated for the XX Award for best onscreen female protagonist.
A personal insight into the changing relationship between a young woman and her transgender parent. They reflect on their relationship with a newfound openness and share experiences of coming out, whilst also wondering what the future looks like now the decision to transition has been made.
– Screening 14:00 Dec 3, Genesis Cinema, in the Mommie Dearest programme.
– Cinematographer Aline Belfort is nominated for the Under 25 award.
Our BAFTA Scotland nominated film Seven Songs for a Long Life is also screening in the features strand.
The intimate story behind our changing relationship with death. A terminal diagnosis used to mean death within months. Modern medicine allows patients to live on for years. A passionate and touching film about uncertainty, about the future that faces all of us, following five patients who choose to sing their way through life.
