SDI at Edinburgh International Film Festival

16th May 2018 / News

June is shaping up to be a BIG month for us at SDI! This year at the 72nd edition of the Edinburgh International Film Festival we have not one but TWO UK Premieres for our new feature films, the World Premiere of this year’s Bridging the Gap shorts and our annual Edinburgh Pitch!

Becoming Animal is a subversive new nature documentary from Swiss Director Peter Mettler, our very own Emma Davie (I Am Breathing) and philosopher David Abram. It leads us to encounter the spaces where humans and animals meet. We pique our senses to witness the so-called natural world, which in turn witnesses us.

The film premiered at CPH:Dox in March and has since screened at DocumentaMadrid and Docs Against Gravity, with Bildrausch Filmfest Basel lined up for the end of the month. You can follow where the film will be screening HERE.

Time Trial, by Director Finlay Pretsell, takes us into the final races of cyclist David Millar’s career, leading to his last encounter with the Tour de France, when every mile travelled is a mile closer to the end. Revealing how the human spirit is driven by forces deeper than success and glory.

The film has been criss-crossing the globe on its festival run since its World Premiere at IDFA in November so we’re very pleased to be bringing it back home for its UK Premiere. The film will also be released in UK cinema from June 29, just in time to whet your appetite for the Tour de France! You can find all the forthcoming screenings of the film HERE.

We are also looking forward to the World Premiere of our Bridging the Gap shorts. The theme we picked for submissions this year was LOVE and as ever the filmmakers came at it from every angle. The passion that drives ambition, love in the face of death, female desire in a conservative country and a complicated love of home are amongst the ideas explored by the filmmakers.

And lastly we have The Edinburgh Pitch, the only international documentary pitching forum in Scotland, now in its 12th year! Independent filmmakers and companies developing and raising finance for creative feature documentaries will pitch their project in front of an international panel on Tuesday 19th of June.

Join us as an Observer to find inspiration, learn how to present your project on an international platform and be amongst the first to discover some exciting new projects from the four corners of the documentary world! You can purchase your Observer pass here.

The full programme of the 72nd Edinburgh International Film Festival will be announced by EIFF Artistic Director, Mark Adams, on Wednesday 23 May. Tickets go on sale to Filmhouse Members on Wednesday 23 May at 12noon and on sale to the public on Friday 25 May at 10am.
